In My Shoes: Advice for dating after you hit 50

Dating is a hot topic among single women over 50. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised. After all, most of us crave companionship. I asked women to contact me if they were willing to talk about the challenges of dating after 50. I got 15 e-mails and phone calls (and one of those was from a guy). As I did the interviews, it became clear that many of them had endured some rough times on the dating scene. A few sounded extremely frustrated. A couple had dating-success stories to share. But even those who haven’t found success had advice to offer.

New crop of Super Bowl ads features CarMax

CarMax Inc. is taking advantage of the buzz associated with the Super Bowl. For the first time, the Goochland County-based automobile retailer has bought ad time in the 48 media markets where it has stores. The Super Bowl will draw about 100 million viewers, a good chunk of whom will be more interested in what Doritos has to say than in Peyton Manning’s pass rating.

Coble’s choice was simple

Given the choice between Temple University and the University of North Carolina, it seemed Meadowbrook High School’s Andre Coble’s college decision was already made for him. The better program was obvious—UNC. But Coble defied conventional wisdom yesterday when he signed his national letter of intent with Temple. Instead of competing in the ACC, Coble will compete in the Mid-American Conference on a team that has only recently found success. In 2009, the Owls went 9-3, their best mark since 1979.

FORT A.P. HILL Acold, hard rain provided a bracing dose of reality for the collection of troubled teens, already ankle-deep in mud and adversity. Drenched and chilled, they struggled to climb walls with ropes and walk gingerly across slippery planks through an obstacle course designed to teach them team work and leadership.

Signing day comes again for Moses

A year ago, Morgan Moses was the headline act among Richmond-area recruits on signing day. He waited until then to make his decision, ultimately deciding to stay in-state and play for the University of Virginia. The 6-7, 330-pound offensive tackle was sure to make an immediate impact. But a year later, he still isn’t enrolled as a student on the Grounds.

Diesel fuel leak closes Henrico road

An underground fuel leak shut down East Parham Road in Henrico County for several hours yesterday and leached diesel into a creek and pond. Around 10:30 a.m., someone noticed fuel in a small lake near the Henrico courts building, just south of Parham Road, said Capt. Chris Buehren, fire department spokesman. Officials traced the leak about a half-mile west to one of two underground storage tanks next to the Henrico police building, where diesel fuel was stored for emergency generators. Buehren said the cause of the leak was a mechanical problem.
