Oak Forest, off Rural Point Road, was built around 1828, according to the Virginia Department of Historic Resources. It’s listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the Virginia Landmark Registry. The owner, Charles B. He’s seeking elimination of a condition that Oak Forest “shall be maintained on the original site. This shall not prevent the owner of the site from adding to the home provided that its basic character remains.“

Many residents of eastern Henrico County don’t care where the funds come from to build a new school. What they care about is that students aren’t going to classes in trailers, don’t have to wait in long cafeteria lines and have facilities on par with other parts of the county. About 75 residents attended a public hearing about the proposed Henrico budget tonight at a Board of Supervisors meeting. Walking down a four-block stretch of Monument Avenue yesterday afternoon, it was easy to suffer from sensory overload. The senses were set upon from all directions—smells of funnel cakes and simmering sausages; sights of people and dogs traversing the historic street dressed up in unusual, often homemade headgear; and sounds of music emanating from porches and sidewalks.

Piles of brick, stone and cinderblock were all that remained of the historic Eggleston Hotel yesterday, a day after the structure partially collapsed and was later demolished. A broken Eggleston Hotel sign laid nearby, and two large heavy equipment excavators sat atop the rubble. The loss of the building at the corner of Second and Leigh streets in Richmond is being felt by the Jackson Ward neighborhood and by preservationists. The building partially collapsed Saturday about 5:45 a.m.

While the average taxpayer may recoil when he hears the word “audit,“ he might embrace it when applied to local governments and how they spend tax dollars. For example, a recent audit in Goochland County turned up almost $200,000 in undeposited utilities checks. The county has had to begin a forensic audit of the utilities department that could cost up to $50,000, and another top-down audit of the county has been approved for later this year, at a cost of up to $15,000.
