Watch It (Or Not) | Crank 2: High Voltage

The last time we saw Chev Chelios he had just bounced off an old man’s car and slammed into the pavement of downtown Los Angeles after falling a thousand feet out of helicopter. It was the first moment of a 90-minute chase across the city that included murder, transvestites and public sex acts, where the film slowed down enough for the audience to catch their breath. Chev had successfully killed the men that injected Chinese poison into his heart and was free to die with all his scores settled. Then he blinked.

As the screen faded to black and a shallow heartbeat introduced the credits, I was excited that this wasn’t the end of such an incredible character. That his hectic pacing refused to be slowed down by something as frivolous as death. What I never took into consideration was how perfect Chev’s death was as an ending to his story. The ultimate exclamation point to Crank’s message of pure anarchy. There never should’ve been a Crank 2

Crank 2: High Voltage picks up on that street next to that old man’s dented car where Chev is pealed off the blacktop and tossed into a van. He wakes up months later with a prosthetic heart – something to keep him alive long enough to harvest the rest of his organs. He, of course, breaks free and begins hunting for his heart, punching, killing or sexually assaulting anyone that gets in his way.

To keep his robot heart beating, Chev has to periodically shock himself. It’s a big leap from the dilemma of the first film, which featured Chev finding unique ways of keeping his adrenaline up, but it leads to some interesting scenes involving jumper cables, tasers, and the inventible public sex acts.

The new premise might seem like a jump in logic but it’s best to keep in mind that this is basically a live action videogame. You’d do well to suspend belief here.

To me it seems almost obvious that they’re setting up a third film and part two is merely the bridge between them. High Voltage plays like one extended action sequence between two plot points. It’s unwavering and unyielding in its energy but it also has very little to say. Where the original movie used its style to help tell a story of revenge, High Voltage’s plot seems to be taking a back seat to experimental filmmaking and a few dozen great action scenes. It looks fantastic but is really just the big explosion before the last explosion.

High Voltage is heavily flawed and desperate to continue a story that rightfully should have stopped but, as a Crank movie, it’s exactly what you want it to be. High energy, completely insane and tons of fun. Things like “plot development” seem so insignificant somewhere around the point that Chev’s head catches on fire. As he burned in the sun giving me the finger, I realized I was watching one of action’s best modern icons… and I wanted his adventure to continue.

VERDICT | 5 out of 10 | Rent It!

Games | Street Fighter IV

If you remember the days when players still flocked to video arcades, you probably remember when Capcom’s “Street Fighter II” ruled the roost. Well, the newest installment, “Street Fighter IV”, is a godsend for those gamers who thought there would never be another follow-up to one of the company’s most well-known franchises.

While “Street Fighter III: Third Strike” was definitely a game that was strictly for the hardcore set, the newest installment is enjoyable enough for the nostalgic and the fanatic alike.

Still, the game is as technical as you might expect a modern fighting game to be. The focus system is “Street Fighter IV’s” new countering system that allows players to absorb their opponents’ attacks and attack them in response.

I’ll admit I wasn’t too excited when I heard that the game used three-dimensional graphics for the characters and backgrounds, but the action still happens in two dimensions, so the difference in perspective doesn’t hinder the action. In fact, there’s so much happening on-screen that the background animations can be a little distracting at times.

To appease those gamers who spent their youths in the arcade, Capcom brought back each of the 12 World Warriors from “Street Fighter II” including series stalwarts such as Chun-Li, Dhalsim, Guile, Ken and Ryu.

Additionally, the home console versions include additional characters from the “Street Fighter Alpha” games. New characters such as Abel, Crimson Viper, El Fuerte and Rufus provide all-new special moves that players will require months to completely master.

Of course, multiplayer is the real draw here. It also goes without saying that an arcade stick is necessary to fully enjoy everything this game has to offer.

“Street Fighter IV” is available for the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360 for $59.99 MSRP.

Watch It (Or Not) | Observe and Report

It can’t be an easy time to be a mall cop. Not that the profession was especially respected before 2009, but now that Hollywood has decided it’s the premier occupation to mock on the big screen, you just know there’s hundreds if not thousands of these hardworking “rent-a-cops” dealing with being called “Paul Blart” by some 12-year-old punks on a daily basis. Now with the release of “Observe and Report,” a film that shares a lot of the themes of the underdog taking on a challenge and potential love interest way out of his league, that “Paul Blart: Mall Cop” parlayed into a three-week run at the number one spot and over 140 million dollars domestically, those 12-year-olds will have a whole new set of material to work with. Mall cops are now not only pudgy losers, they’re also bi-polar, obsessive gun nuts that use the F-word too much and kind of date rape people…or maybe I’m reading too much into it.

This is my not so subtle way of letting you know how many lines “Observe and Report” willingly crosses. Many of them not so shocking as the Internet buzz would have you believe, but just enough to make you gasp a little before laughing. That is, of course, if you’re up for a five-minute, slow motion, naked chase scene.

Seth Rogen plays Ronnie, the head of mall security in “Observe and Report.” He’s not sweet or loveable. In fact, Ronnie is the least likable character that Rogen has ever played but in this world it doesn’t seem to matter. He’s easy to understand and root for in his current crisis of stopping the parking lot flasher, the midnight robber and of course winning the love of the slutty make-up counter girl he secretly lusts after in-between shifts.

“Observe and Report” is put together remarkably well. The perfect amount of humor, absurdity and story progression to keep you interested throughout. It’s a huge improvement for writer/director Jody Hill who, in his first film “The Foot Fist Way,” seemed more concerned in creating a great character (with his star Danny McBride) then actually telling a story worth telling.

With “Observe and Report” he leans on some worthy crutches in his casting. Collette Wolfe is fantastic as the crippled coffee girl and I could watch Aziz Ansari do his “F—- YOU” battle for at least another hour. Michael Peña steals the show as Dennis, Ronnie’s right-hand man, though he plays the part so broadly that he would be just as believable as Ace Ventura’s or Roger Rabbit’s sidekick. Somehow it works in the dark, depressing atmosphere of “Observe and Report.”

If only every mall cop in the world had a cartoon sidekick to break up the monotony and distract them from the pre-teens whipping cupcakes at them. It looks like the only place it’s easy to be a mall cop is on the big screen, where the underdog always wins.

Games | Boing Docomodake

I have always been a sucker for any video game with a Japanese title that I can’t correctly pronounce, and Ignition Entertainment’s DS platformer Boing Docomodake is no exception.

The game is a quaint platformer based on the whimsical adventures of Papa Docomodake, a sentient mushroom that wants to locate his lost family members. Papa and his family are mascots for NTT Docomo, a Japanese cell phone company, but the game play is easy enough to figure out even if you’re not familiar with the characters.

For a mushroom, Papa is pretty versatile with a wide range of abilities in his arsenal.
Not only does the game play involve the usual ducking, running and jumping to clear gaps, but it also includes several puzzle elements. By using the DS’ stylus to split Papa into smaller versions of himself called minis, you can move him through narrow crevices and reach new areas.

Of course, the game’s simple nature leads it down a path of well-worn platform game clichés.

As you might expect, Papa collects coins found in each of the levels just like the characters in every platform game since the dawn of time. Luckily, the coins can be used to purchase art stills and in-game songs so looking for them isn’t a complete waste of time.

If you’d like to experiment with ‘shrooms without failing your next random drug test, give Boing Docomodake a try.

Boing Docomodake is available for the Nintendo DS for $19.99 MSRP.

Watch It (Or Not) | Adventureland

If someone tells you that ““Adventureland”,” the big screen follow- up to “Superbad” for director Greg Mottola, is the “funniest movie of the year,” then they haven’t seen it yet. They’ve just seen the previews. Don’t get me wrong, “Adventureland” has its moments, but that’s not what carries the movie. It’s closer to be being a dramatic coming-of-age story in the abysmal setting of that first real working experience. More heart and nostalgia than hardcore belly laughs, which is fine, but will audiences be able to respond to this sweet summer of love if they’re expecting something else? How many people will walk out disappointed because it wasn’t the movie it was “supposed” to be?

The best thing I could do for you is pass on the warning that someone passed to me. Forget the corndog jokes, forget Bill Hader’s crazy mustache or the cast of recognizable talent that has made you laugh in the past. Forget the previews completely - “Adventureland” has some brilliant moments of subtle humor, but it’s not the comedy you’re expecting it to be.

Jesse Eiesenberg plays James, an intellectual slumming it in Pittsburgh trying to save up some money for Ivy League grad school. He takes a job at the local amusement park where he meets a slew of memorable characters sleepwalking through their jobs as summer-carnies. One of which is a girl that will change his life forever.

Make no mistake about it - “Adventureland” takes place in the 1980s. The shaggy hair, the high-waisted pants and the cars so horrible that no one now would be caught dead in them unless they were being ironic, all scream of that wonderful decade. If none of that works to get you back to that specific time and place, then the soundtrack should do the trick. David Bowie, Lou Reed, The Replacements and one endless string of “Rock Me Amadeus” play like the perfect mix tape you were always trying to make in junior high.

“Adventureland” is all about nostalgia. For some people, it’ll be nostalgia for that specific era, music, clothes or the remarkable ease of scoring pot. For others, it’ll be nostalgia for that girl and that perfect summer shared together. It’s one of those cases where the details may be foreign to certain age groups but the sentiment is universal. We all know of love.

The previews dare you not to fall in love with the object of Jesse’s affections Em (Kristen Stewart). She’s definitely alluring, but I had a little trouble getting past her “Twilight” persona. I look at her now and no longer see the little asthmatic hell raiser from “Panic Room” or the blossoming young star poised to take over Hollywood with her crooked grin and giant hair, but instead the vampire-lover she will forever be remembered for. For me it was easier to fall in love with the idea of falling in love, something the movie translates beautifully, with or without a consistent string of laughs.

Verdict | 9 out of 10 | Watch It!

Games | ONECHANBARA: BIKINI SAMURAI SQUAD

Male gamers have often looked up at the stars and wondered when a video game featuring women in bikinis, samurai swords and zombies would see a commercial release. Well, gentlemen, that day is finally here.

D3 Publisher and developer Tamsoft have teamed up again to bring yet another installment of D3 Japan’s Simple series to the West. “Onechanbara: Bikini Samurai Squad” for the Xbox 360 is actually the third installment in the series, and although the first two entries were only released in Japan, its simplicity ensures that American gamers won’t need much back story to fully enjoy its subtle nuances.

If you played D3’s previous 360 game “Earth Defense Force 2017,” you’ll know what to expect. Legions of enemies have invaded an unknown city, and it’s up to Aya and Saki, a pair of sexy samurai sisters, to save the world by killing numerous waves of the undead in each level.

The game is a simple hack-and-slash fest with buckets of blood. In fact, there’s so much blood that the 360 controller’s left button function is dedicated to cleaning your character’s sword when it becomes hard to remove it from inside a zombie’s chest cavity.

By completing levels, you can unlock more provocative outfits and accessories for the sisters to wear.

“Onechanbara” is pretty straightforward in its presentation, so don’t look for glitzy graphical touches. Everything about this game screams low budget from the simple level design to the cinema scenes that flesh out the story, no pun intended.

Players looking for their next epic challenge might be disappointed, but if you’re willing to approach the game with an open mind, there’s a lot to love.

“Onechanbara: Bikini Samurai Squad” is available for the Xbox 360 for $59.99 MSRP.

Watch It (Or Not) | Monsters vs. Aliens

“Monsters vs. Aliens” should’ve been a catastrophe. I’m not talking about actual monsters and aliens fighting for planet Earth, which would almost certainly be catastrophic, I’m referring instead to the latest animated feature film from Dreamworks that pits a slew of classic monsters against an alien invasion in a modern setting with a classic 50’s sci-fi B-movie vibe. That sentence was a catastrophe so you could imagine how crowded and complex the movie would be. Different characters spinning off in too many directions, never focusing long enough to tell a story worth telling. Instead this kid’s movie finds a leading lady with a simple message and turns a crowded ensemble into the most horribly grotesque and wonderfully entertaining support system you could imagine.

Choosing to focus the film on Susan (Reese Witherspoon), the quiet beauty who was about to begin a life with her new husband before getting hit by a meteorite and growing 50 feet, was the smartest thing the film could do. It gives the audience a point of reference and a specific adventure to follow, complete with a family-friendly message. In this case it’s “finding the hero inside yourself,” or something like that. I couldn’t be bothered with life lessons once the parade of beautifully animated monsters started showing up.

Focusing on one character also allows those supporting characters to become just that – support. This is Susan’s journey, and everyone else is just popping up from time to time to lend a little emotion or comic relief when needed. We don’t get to learn too much about the crew of monsters, the eccentric President or the attacking alien overlord, but their limited doses of memorable laughs are just enough to endear them to you in the long run. We come to love them without any unnecessary baggage.

As a whole, the film is beautifully animated but it shines the brightest during he film’s big action sequences. We first get to see the monsters in action in the streets of San Francisco against a towering alien robot that has no problem walking through a building or ten to get to his target, our very own 50-foot woman scurrying away as quickly as she can in a pair of makeshift roller skates (courtesy of a couple of abandoned cars on the highway). The action is inventive, clever and sharp. It’s also too infrequent. There are really only two major sequences in the film that dazzle and impress. Then on your way to the parking lot, you do the math only to find out how light the movie really is.

“Monsters vs Aliens” has enough laughs and great characterization to survive without the explosions, and the 3-D is vivid enough to make even the plainest scenes pop, but another battle or two really would have made this something special. You’re an animated movie with “Vs.” in the title for God’s sake – Show us what you can do!

Games | Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection

Why do classic video games remain popular in an age of graphical realism? Nostalgia is a huge reason why they’re still in style, but they also provide a decent value for the money.

For instance, Sega’s newest retro anthology, Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection, includes a whopping 40 titles, trumping the game count in Sega’s last two compilations.

Most of the titles debuted on Sega’s 16-bit Genesis home console in the 1990s. Of course, many of the revered old-school franchises such the Golden Axe, Shinobi and Sonic the Hedgehog series and even lesser known gems such as Comix Zone, Dynamite Headdy and Ristar are included.

Finally, the entire Streets of Rage beat-‘em-up trilogy is available in a Sega compilation for the first time. Also, the compilation includes role-playing games such as Beyond Oasis and each of the titles in the Phantasy Star and Shining Force series.

By completing specific tasks, trophies and achievements can be unlocked in both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions, respectively. Also, additional arcade and Sega Master System games become available for play after these awards are won.

Still, the question begs: is Ultimate Genesis Collection really the ultimate Sega compilation? Well, the disc doesn’t include classic Genesis games based on licensed fare such as Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse or Michael Jackson’s Moonwalker, but with the sheer wealth of games in the collection, most retro fans will be willing to overlook the absence of a few titles.

Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection is available for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 for $29.99 MSRP.

Watch It (Or Not) | I Love You, Man

Terms like “Bromance” and “Man Date” are not things we need. They’re the kind of pop culture buzz words like “Preggers” or “Seacrest” that will make historians from the future think we were either mentally handicapped or too lazy to pronounce two words at once. “I Love You, Man,” the new film starring Paul Rudd as a man who has always had trouble finding guy friends and is now searching for a potential best man for his wedding party, doesn’t actively promote these low points of pop slang but it has certainly inspired the Internet and E! Channel to put them into heavy rotation.

Even in its perpetuation of grammatical nonsense, ILYM has a few nice things going for it. Primarily that Rudd has come into his own as a leading man. As Peter, the adorable groom-to-be, Rudd is hilarious and genuine in his search for a bro-mate (See? I can make up cool-sounding words that don’t mean anything, too.) Rudd proves that he’s easy to root for even through a montage of uncomfortable man dates that includes him throwing up at a poker party and accidentally open-mouth kissing some guy his mom suggested. This introduced the theme of awkwardness that I wasn’t sure the movie could overcome. I’m also not sure how you ACCIDENTALLY open mouth kiss anything.

I don’t always do so well with films like this where awkwardness is embraced and played for laughs. I understand why it’s funny but have trouble getting past laughing at someone else’s expense, even if that someone is a fictional character.

There’s a hope that the awkwardness would end after Peter finds his Best Man, Sydney (Jason Segel), but their bizarre bond over ’70s rock and an uninhibited lifestyle just creates a new sense of awkwardness when it causes a rift between Peter and his fiancée, Zoey (Rashida Jones). Jones isn’t given much to do, but it’s fantastic to see her up on the big screen. It’s only a matter of time before America falls in love with her freckled nose, casts her in every girlfriend role Hollywood offers, rejects her when she branches out, acts poorly when she marries some writer that they’ve never heard of before, realizes that “she’s just like us!” in the pages of US Weekly, makes fun of her ugly babies, roots for her comeback and celebrates her all over again.

While awkwardness abounds, ILYM remains consistently funny, crude, and clever. Segel and Rudd are like buddy cops without the guns or enthusiasm. Watching them fall in manlove with each other should stir up all kinds of jealousy in the audience as the guys long for this kind of snappy man-banter and the women watch their dates man-crush on a couple of mimbos. (Okay - I’m done with the man-slang.) The real chemistry on screen helps the laughs feed off the awkwardness and by the time the Incredible Hulk shows up (it’s less crazy than it sounds) you’re on board for whatever uncomfortable situation this movie is ready to throw your way.

At the end of the last game, the usually peaceful LocoRoco defeated their enemy, the Mojas, but the Mojas’ leader Bonmucho has returned to conquer their planet with a life-draining song.

The original entry in the series was critically acclaimed because of its simple controls.

By using the PSP’s left and right shoulder buttons to tilt the landscape, the blob-like LocoRoco move left or right. Tapping both shoulder buttons simultaneously makes them jump.

Additionally, the LocoRoco can join together to form a one large blob or they can split into individual sections. Many of the game’s puzzles require them to assemble or divide in order to overcome obstacles.

The LocoRoco, however, have learned new abilities since the last game and can now swim, spin and encase themselves inside protective shells to avoid harm. These new abilities add another layer to the game play by making the stages less predictable.

Since music threatens the LocoRoco’s planet, they can also to use music to save it. By collecting musical notes, they can add new instruments to the background music and unlock ability-boosting bonuses.

The game design is two-dimensional, but the simple shapes and sugary-sweet color scheme give the game more appeal than a lot of today’s three-dimensional games. The bouncy background tunes will be etched in your mind for weeks.

LocoRoco 2 is available for the PlayStation Portable for $19.99 MSRP.

Watch It (Or Not) | Race To Witch Mountain

Dwayne Johnson, formerly known as wrestling superstar The Rock, has sold his soul to Walt Disney. He was once primed to fill the empty boots of a gubernatorial-bound Arnold Schwarzenegger, but has made it clear that he’d rather make movies his little girl would enjoy. Okay, that sounds noble when I phrase it that way, and trying to please a daughter certainly explains his next role as The Tooth Fairy, but what about all those young men that embraced him as the evolution of the action hero? Are we forced to watch him play nice, even in a movie about an alien invasion?

In “Race to Witch Mountain,” Johnson plays a Vegas cab driver named Jack Bruno. (Have you ever heard a more obvious action hero name? They may as well have called him Buck Fistbump.) One day a couple of good-looking blonde children jump into his cab and instruct him to drive in “that direction.” After they’re nearly run off the road by a pack of government SUVs and a flying saucer, it’s revealed that these kids are actually space aliens looking for their missing ship. The aforementioned feds and aliens stand in their way, and Jack is their only hope.

The simple premise allows the film to move fast. For at least forty minutes, “Witch Mountain” is merciless with its pacing, taking us on the chase through different locations, new ideas and tons of beautiful explosions. The film’s unwillingness to slow down brings a great sense of tension to the idea that they are being hunted but, like any good chase, “Witch Mountain” eventually runs out of places to hide.

A dry third act filled with a touch too much CGI slows things down considerably, and, without the tension of the hunt to distract me, it hit me that I didn’t really know or care about these characters.
During the tearful goodbye between Bruno, the kids and the hot outer space specialist they picked up along the way (did I not mention that Carla Gugino shows up!?), as they embraced and we watch what should’ve been this generation’s Terminator shed a tear, I realized, for all the fun I was having watching them outrun g-men and aliens, I never really made a connection with them. They were empty characters silhouetted by the special effects behind them. In the long run it’s not a huge deal. It just showed me how thin this movie really was.

Let’s not forget those first 40 minutes, though. It’s the kind of solid, edge-of-your-seat adventure that we want from Johnson or The Rock or Buck Fistbump or whatever he wants to call himself. I think he’s proven that he doesn’t need to be a traditional action hero to entertain us. He doesn’t even need to be a fully realized character, because audiences will be willing to follow his presence and charisma on any adventure… No matter what his name is.

Games | The Last Remnant

What would you do if you had a special ability that suddenly awakened one day? Square-Enix’s The Last Remnant asks gamers this question while giving them a front row seat to view some of the largest-scale battles ever seen in a role-playing video game.

The plot centers on remnants, legendary relics that grant its wielders unique powers and spark off international conflicts within the game’s fictional world.

When soldiers kidnap his sister Irina, the remnant of the game’s protagonist, Rush Sykes’, inadvertently awakens and vaporizes most of her captors. Although he fails to save Irina, Sykes soon discovers that different world factions seek to locate remnants from around the world and control their powers.

Despite his artlessness, Sykes joins an opposing army in order to rescue his sister. In fact, the game’s military theme is what makes it stand out from other strategy role-playing games.

The game’s battles are turn-based, but they focus on military squads executing commands in concert instead of handing those chores over to individual characters. Battles can involve up to 70 enemies at once, so planning strategies in advance is necessary to guarantee success.

Even with the legions of units that appear on the battlefields, the stunning visuals are crisp, vibrant and detailed.

Sadly, the constant loading from the disc makes the animation freeze or drag at times during battles and cinemas. While this choppiness can be overlooked at times, it becomes terribly distracting during long skirmishes.

If you can look past the animation issues, however, The Last Remnant is a solid entry in the role-playing genre with a refreshing approach to traditional design.

The Last Remnant is available for the Xbox 360 or $59.99 MSRP

Watch It (Or Not) | Watchmen

If Watchmen is anything – it’s thorough. Based on the graphic novel by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons, a collection that is largely regarded as the greatest story ever told in comics as well as a turning point in how the industry was perceived, Watchmen is a stunningly faithful adaptation. Because of its depth and complexity it has been called unfilmable, but director Zack Snyder, a man that clearly did his homework and is very passionate about the source, did the unthinkable and filmed an authentic and entertaining masterwork. But at what cost? The unfilmable film has been filmed and done so faithfully, but surely we lost something in there besides the mythical space squid.

Watchmen sells its soul for the details. Everything from the photos on the wall to the tares in a trench coat is lovingly authentic, but the story at times becomes cluttered and lengthy. Watchmen is an epic adventure too worried about securing the right song for the opening credits than it is in securing an emotional connection with its audience.

Ask even the most informed and eloquent fan of the comic to explain Watchmen and chances are it’ll still start off with an, “Ummmm…” And with good reason. There’s a lot of stuff going on. Politics, doomsday, superheroes, impotency… it’s a difficult string to untangle in a sentence or two. Simply put, Watchmen is a murder mystery. A regrouping of retired heroes to identify and take down a serial killer that’s targeting their kind.

The more complicated explanation would identify Watchmen as a deconstruction of how we perceive superheroes in the real world. What would really happen if people put on masks and fought crime? In this world, Batman becomes Rorschach, a mental patient behind an inkblot mask who will spare no criminal (or puppy) that crosses his path. Captain America becomes The Comedian, a government soldier poisoned by a lifetime of war. Superman becomes Dr. Manhattan, America’s 100-foot tall secret weapon who’s bald, blue, naked and winning the Vietnam War with a wave of his finger and a blank stare.

Watchmen features half a dozen realistic extremes in its characters. Twisted versions of the figures you idolized as children are explored here… at length. Like I said, Watchmen is thorough. Unfortunately, it’s to the point of distraction. The mystery of the masked killer gets lost as we explore these characters. They’re not established as suspects so much as they are targets, and as a result, what should be the driving force of the movie takes a back seat to back-stories. While Watchmen is paying attention to the details, it distracts itself from the reason it began exploring the characters to begin with.

No matter how closely they followed their bible, something was lost in translation. The frenzied masterpiece on the page can’t find itself on the big screen. As much as I loved watching Rorschach and Nite Owl on the case or Ozymandias schooling a would-be assassin, Zack Snyder’s Watchmen proves to be fiercely entertaining proof that this story is in fact unfilmable.

For now.

After years of tolerating the same medieval fantasy settings in countless role-playing video games, 2007’s Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 was the one that made me love the genre all over again. For once, it was good to play through an adventure in a realistic setting, even if it was an unfamiliar location such as modern-day Japan.

Atlus’ Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4 places its unnamed protagonist into a contemporary world where a murder mystery unfolds.

After the hero arrives in Inaba to live with his uncle, a series of murders happens. Soon after, a strange television station called the “Midnight Channel” begins its late night broadcasts.

By watching the station, the hero and his classmates are able to visit the world of the “Midnight Channel” and search for the suspect. The characters battle shadows using their powerful alter-egos called Personas in randomly-generated dungeons.

As in the previous installment, the protagonist must develop strong friendships with his classmates during the day that affect his battle prowess. By mastering social links with other non-player characters, he is able to strengthen his Personas’ abilities for use in combat.

From its Persona fusion system to its real-time weather system, the game is incredibly deep.

Persona 4’s art direction, however, is the feature that makes the game stand out. Shigenori Soejima’s striking character designs include quirky high school students, mythological creatures and a giant stuffed bear that make this one worth a look.

Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4 is available for the PlayStation 2 for $39.99 MSRP.

“So, do you know what this movie is even about?” the clerk at the theater said to me just after I purchased a ticket for Echelon Conspiracy. It’s a fair enough question even if it was coming from the wrong side of the ticket counter. Doing my best used car salesmen impression I tried to sell him on the movie he’d just sold me a ticket to. “A man finds the cell phone of his dreams. Its mysterious text messages give him stock tips, sure bets on the casino room floor and the thrill of easy money… Then it tries to kill him.” A concerned look flashed across the teller’s face as if to say, “Are you sure this is a movie you want to see?”, to which I replied with a knowing smile that said, “Why do you think I showed up early for the discount matinee price?”

It’s not a terrible idea for a movie, at least it wasn’t last fall when Eagle Eye came out, but aside from being that blockbuster’s red-headed stepchild, I found myself eager to check out this new techno-thriller. After all, Eagle Eye had the dream casting and money to back it up, but it got lost in its own big budget and Hollywood pizzazz. A stripped down bank account and a group of B-listers might be just the kind of thing a movie about an evil cell phone needs to strip down the noise and focus on what could be a pretty incredible idea.

Sadly, things get off to a rough start. Bad pacing and wooden acting cloud the introduction of Shane West as Max Peterson, the man with the magic phone, sending up red flags that, even at those matinee prices, you’re starting to wish you’d seen Street Fighter instead. Thankfully, they treat the concept with respect. Max is constantly asking the same questions we are, “Where did the phone come from?” “Who is sending the texts?” but doing the obvious is no pass for presenting your film like a Sci-Fi Channel original movie without the giant alligator.

Inexplicably, the deeper they get into the mystery the better the film as a whole becomes. Not only are they careful enough to not answer those questions too quickly (I won’t either) but in the midst of it all it actually develops some style! An epic car chase and bathroom brawl that would make Jason Bourne proud anchor the second act of the film and firmly secure the worth of that matinee price…
…before getting predictable and lazy in the film’s finale. Like I said, they’re pretty good about concealing who’s behind it all, but the big reveal isn’t exactly satisfying. They bring nothing new to the concept of the war of technology and they don’t even tell their unoriginal adventure in an original way. It’s a fun afternoon (or early morning) at the movies, but Echelon is still the kind film that will forever be “just like that other movie.”

Watch It (Or Not) | Slumdog Millionaire

Slumdog Millionaire was ruined for me. Not in a sense that some big twist was revealed before I saw it, none of the characters here are really ghosts talking to kids that can see dead people (though that would’ve been pretty awesome), instead it was ruined for me in terms of expectations. I believed what the Internet told me, that this little independent movie from the other side of the world had done the impossible and turned the backdrop of a simple game show into one of the most creative love stories of our time. It was going to make me look at the life in a new way! (Spoiler alert! – It didn’t.)
Jamal is the Slumdog and we meet him on the set of India’s version of Who Wants to be a Millionaire where he’s one question away from being the richest gofer ever to play the game. How could a boy of such humble means possibly know the answers to such difficult questions? The cops are as curious as the audience and we get our explanation from inside a police interrogation room.

The questions are reviewed one by one, each with a flashback from Jamal’s life where we see how he came to know the answers. Such a great use of a random game show. It’s like giving someone your medical history by playing The Family Feud. In the flashbacks, we see the answers as well as glimpses of Jamal’s life growing up on the streets of Mumbai dealing with being orphaned by a holy war, nearly losing an eye and swindling tourists out of their money (and shoes) with his brother Salim.

The only constant in Jamal’s life is Latika, a fellow orphan he fell for and swore to protect, even as the twists of life kept them apart. He’s gone on the show in hopes that she will see it and they can be reunited. A very sweet idea that’s equally convincing thanks to the nine actors playing the kids at various ages. They held the film together just fine but I would’ve loved more from both the bombastic host of Millionaire and the Inspector. Slumdog is foremost about the three kids and their tale of survival, but it’s also a story being told to these two supporting characters. As an audience, we’re in the same position as them and had we had the opportunity to relate to them a little more, I think the movie would’ve been stronger for it.

Largely though, there’s little to complain about. Slumdog moves quickly, is well told and beautifully shot. But just because I’ve got nothing to complain about doesn’t mean it moved me. The movie that was going to change my life didn’t even make me shed a tear and… wasn’t it supposed to? It was ruined for me but what about you? Is Slumdog a life-changer or another victim of high expectations? Please don’t take my word for it. Find out for yourself if this sweet little story is worth all the praise.

Games | Prince of Persia: The Fallen King

Jamming a fork into a toaster while it’s plugged in or running across a busy highway might count as activities to combat boredom, but just because you could do these things doesn’t mean that you should. Similarly, just because the Nintendo DS lets players use its stylus and touchscreen to control its games doesn’t mean they work for the system’s entire library.

Ubi Soft’s Prince of Persia: The Fallen King is a perfect example of a great game marred by stylus controls. It features both the Prince and a mysterious new ally called the Magus as they team up to rescue the king.

Whether Nintendo would like to admit it or not, the DS’ touchscreen isn’t always as precise as it should be. For that reason, using the stylus to control the characters can be more laborious than it should be at times.

Trying to get the Prince to climb up walls and slide under columns requires a quick double tap, but sometimes it doesn’t work. Also, fighting enemies is a pain since you have to tap the enemy you want to target, but if you get surrounded, it’s hard to defend yourself while attacking.

One positive is that the DS’ top screen is used as a map that shows how much farther you have to go to finish the current stage. Still, it’s a bad sign when you find yourself getting antsy to start the next one just because you’re annoyed.

Apparently, the designers knew that players would get frustrated at some point so they were merciful enough to give the Prince unlimited continues.

If Prince of Persia included button controls, it would be a much more enjoyable experience. As it stands, the game is a serviceable platformer with wonderful hand-drawn graphics and a decent storyline.

Prince of Persia: The Fallen King is available for the Nintendo DS for $29.99 MSRP

It’s a Perfect Fit But is That a Good Thing?

The older I get the more I realize how important a comfortable shoe is. Something that fits right and that won’t distract you as you try to shuffle through life. You could say the exact opposite about a good movie. The greatest films of all time confront you with the challenges of life and dare you to look at the world in new ways, even if they are uncomfortable ones. They pinch in the toe but they look great and when you pop them off at the end of the day you know they were worth the extra effort.

I’m reaching for an analogy that a Shopaholic might appreciate if only to say that “Confessions of a Shopaholic” is not this kind of movie. Or shoe. It’s a comfortable fit. It’s practically a flip-flop dipped in glitter. It’s exactly what you expect and I can’t decide if that’s a good thing or a bad thing. As much as we may love a movie that forces us to think, or a shoe that looks great but destroys our feet, sometimes it’s nice to kick back with something predictable and easy. From beat one you know every shoe-loving, closet-stuffing avenue “Confessions of a Shopaholic” is going to wander down.

You may not know a Rebecca Bloomwood type in real life, but chances are, in the battlegrounds of the department store, you’ve crossed paths with this ditzy young professional swiping the last pair of Gucci boots out of some unsuspecting woman’s hands or buying a blouse in every single color because you never really know which shoe you’re going to want to wear that day. Rebecca lives to shop and that has gotten her into a little bit of trouble. While lying in a pile of past due bills, she exclaims, “I used to be a valued customer and now they’re sending me hate mail!” That sums up the kind of sweet, naïve girl with good intentions and a passion to accessorize that you’re about to go on an adventure with.

Desperate to pay off her debt, Rebecca takes a job writing for a financial magazine. The shopaholic giving advice on savings is the perfect twist of irony to set things moving. Watching her deal with her shopping addiction and find a fresh approach to writing something she knows next to nothing about is refreshing and fun. (Spoiler alert: She turns everything into a fashion metaphor. Most of them better than the one I stumbled through at the beginning of this review.) Her bubbly charm wins out and she becomes a big sensation.

It helps that Rebecca is easy to root for. Isla Fisher brings a lot of natural warmth to the character and proves something that the trailers made me think was impossible—that Fisher could carry a movie as the leading lady even through tired clichés like “sample-sale-cat-fights” and “closets exploding with clothes.” The right person in the right role can make anything bearable. It’s hardly a perfect fit, but you get what you pay for.

VERDICT | 6 out of 10 | Rent It!

Games | Little Red Riding Hood’s Zombie BBQ

Classic fairy tales stop being relevant to kids once they hit school age, but I’m sure those stories might have older fans if automatic weapons and grenades made more appearances in them.

Gammick Entertainment’s Little Red Riding Hood’s Zombie BBQ catches up with Red years after she saved Grandma from the Big Bad Wolf. A zombie army has invaded Fairy Tale Land, so it’s up to Red and her ninja cohort Momotaru to send those zombies back to hell.

While Red loses her hood and picks up a machine gun, Momotaru braves the streets with an arsenal of throwing stars. Along the way, Red can pick up power-ups such as laser guns, shotguns and flamethrowers.

If the zombies get too close to shoot, she and Momotaru can also decapitate them with their machetes or blow them up with bombs. Usually, the creatures explode in a messy haze of blood and guts.

Character movement can be controlled with the stylus or the directional pad, but the stylus is always used to determine the direction in which the character shoots. The stylus’ constant use sometimes obscures the rest of the action, but it’s easier on the thumbs than constant button-mashing.

The cute anime visuals keep Zombie BBQ from becoming too gritty, but it definitely isn’t a game for kids. If you still don’t believe that it’s a game for adults, one of the most memorable moments is when Granny is possessed and begins to spew vomit from her mouth.

Little Red Riding Hood’s Zombie BBQ is available for the Nintendo DS for $19.99 MSRP.

Watch It (or not) | Push: Smart Power Told Stupidly

Since the beginning of World War II the ruling powers of the world have been experimenting on individuals determined to have psychic potential, all in hopes of enhancing their abilities and using these super soldiers to make the world a better place (Or at least a place where people can turn off the light without getting out of bed.) This is what we’re told in the opening credits of Push, an action-thriller that pits good-looking people against each other in a series of power trips and head games.

After a secret drug to amplify these powers is created and its test subject goes missing, we’re introduced to two second generation psychics that find themselves sucked into the hunt by the prophecies of their parents. The two rookies, still struggling to understand their powers, gather a group of similarly gifted people to help them find the missing subject and take down those responsible.

Each character has a reason to go after the agency behind the drug, be it saving a loved one or just good old-fashioned revenge, and for every reason there’s a new power to explore. Casual moviegoers that haven’t really embraced the recent pop culture boom of super powered people running all over their TV and movie screens may get lost in the parade of mind-readers and prophets, but it’s in using these characters and their gifts to their fullest where Push really shines.

The film doesn’t shy away from exploring what these powers can do both alone and in unison. We’ve seen these tired old tricks in action a dozen times before but Push finds a way to use them together that kept me both guessing and entertained. At the same time, this is really a film more about the wirework then it is about staying one step ahead of its audience, so don’t worry too much about getting lost.

We’re all there for the action anyway, right? As much as I love a good twist or clever use of a character’s ability to see through time by smelling someone’s toothbrush (yeah, it’s a little weird but it totally works), it was the rainbow sparkled punches and image of Chris Evans being pinball-bounced off the walls by a telekinetic baddie in the film’s trailers that sold me my ticket. Push boasts a few cool action sequences that included hovering guns and screaming banshees powerful enough to make a fish explode but it feels like it never goes big enough. Even in the film’s finale, when the cries of an epic villain make the walls tremble around him, we see the force of his power not in the toppling of a structure of steel and stone but bamboo and string. It fit the beautiful Hong Kong setting but was somehow a little anti-climactic and visually plain.

Push feels as if it’s building toward something it never truly reaches. That, as well as the film’s refusal to clean up a key story line or two, just reeks of a desperate plea for a sequel.

VERDICT

Games | KINGDOM HEARTS RE: CHAIN OF MEMORIES

If you’ve been living in a cave for the past few years, Kingdom Hearts is the action role-playing game series that drops a 14-year-old boy named Sora into a universe inhabited by characters from Square-Enix’s famed Final Fantasy franchise and animated Disney films.

Square-Enix’s Kingdom Hearts Re: Chain of Memories is a new card-based role-playing video game that happens between the first and second installments of the series.

Re: Chain of Memories itself is a remake of a Game Boy Advance game released in 2004, with newly animated cutscenes and real-time action. The game forces Sora to relive various battles he has won before to regain abilities he previously lost.

The action happens inside a mysterious fortress called Castle Oblivion where Sora battles many of the same enemies from the first game.

Everything in the game is influenced by the use of playing cards, including Sora’s physical attacks, magic spells, summons, maps and the enemies that appear in each room. When you run out of cards, you can refill your hand, but it takes longer to refresh each time you run out, so it’s important to choose your cards wisely.

As a remake, Re: Chain of Memories is pretty decent. New voice acting and battles make the game a bit longer this time, but trying to select cards in real-time while being attacked by groups of enemies can be frustrating.

If you’ve never touched a Kingdom Hearts game before, I would suggest playing the first one before attempting this game. Trust me, the first time you summon Winnie the Pooh or Aladdin during a battle is a trip.

Kingdom Hearts Re: Chain of Memories is available for the PlayStation 2 for $29.99

“He’s Just Not That Into You” isn’t exactly a romantic comedy - at least, not in the most traditional sense. Yes, the characters work themselves into the same sorts of tizzies over falling in and out of love - or finding love in the first place - but mixed in with the fizziness is an unexpected seriousness, an attempt at injecting realism and even failure.

Watch It (Or Not) | Taken

Late spring I began receiving these e-mails about a movie called “Taken.” Apparently the good people of Australia were treated nearly a year ago to the release of this Liam Neeson thriller about a man in search of his missing daughter, and they’ve since been spreading the word about how brutally beautiful the gritty, vigilante adventure is. It sounded awesome but unlikely, or at the very least unexpected. I had trouble picturing the soft-spoken, Academy Award nominee cracking skulls, even in the name of a missing kid. As I learned soon after entering the theater, “Taken” is a true lesson in how powerful the unexpected can be because, even with the luxury of advanced warning, I’m not sure anything could have prepared me for what went down in there.

“Taken” is truly a departure for Neeson. Not to say that we’ve never seen him flex his muscles on screen before, but there’s a difference between carrying a light saber and using it on someone. I swear, he’s the only featured Jedi Knight in “Star Wars” NOT to have cut off some dude’s arm. All he does in that movie is Jedi-mind-trick single mothers and explain what midi-chlorians are to dim little children. In “Taken” we get to see him at his most intense, somehow finding a combination between the calm, cool character we’ve all come to love and a violent madman that makes Jason Bourne look like a whiney little girl looking for his mommy.

Neeson plays an ex-CIA specialist who hears his daughter’s kidnapping over a cellular phone and promises the kidnappers that if they don’t release her… he will kill them. The chilling phone call begins what turns out to be a pretty straightforward kidnap thriller where Nesson uses clues to work his way up the bad guy ladder. It’s in how he works that the movie is so unexpectedly awesome. You see, the trick is – He’s completely insane.

I wish there were an easy way to explain how insane he is. Somehow saying, “innocents are shot to emphasize a point,” and, “there’s a light bulb torture scene that the writers of “24” wish they could’ve come up with,” sounds like hollow praise when you find out what this movie really has in store for you. Like I said, I was warned but still walked in unprepared. Perhaps it’s best if I allow you the same luxury.

The beautiful thing about “Taken” is its simplicity. I found myself looking for red herrings, looking for the shady best friend that would inevitably turn out to be the mastermind behind the daughter’s disappearance. But that’s just nonsense. “Taken” doesn’t hide anything from you. Everything is on the surface for all to see. There’s no big twist to get wrapped up in, just a series of believable progressions that don’t worry about being clever as much as they worry about being entertaining. It’s hard not to love something so brutally honest. …and unexpectedly good.

The 1990s decade was a bewildering time for me, filled with wonder, personal introspection and lots of regret. I’m sure the whole decade would have gone a lot more smoothly, however, if I had been able to shoot fireballs from my hands and perform spinning windmill kicks.

Suffice it to say I was psyched when I heard that SNK Playmore had released The King of Fighters Collection: The Orochi Saga. The competitive fighting game compilation contains each of the titles that comprise the series’ Orochi storyline: The King of Fighters ’94, ’95, ’96, ’97 and ’98.

Rugal Bernstein, a crime lord and skilled martial artist, decides to host the KOF tournament in order to sate his need to battle new opponents. Later, as the tournament’s fame grows, a larger power known as the Orochi clan finally reveals itself to the participants and all hell breaks loose.

If you were a fighting game fan during the 1990s, The King of Fighters Collection is just like reliving those days by means of a greatest hits CD. You know, the ones that inexplicably put clean versions of gangsta rap hits on the same track listing with techno music?

In addition to its great 2D graphics and pattern-based game play, the KOF compilation includes an extensive media gallery including illustrations and music tracks.

Expect appearances by series favorites such as Terry Bogard, Joe Higashi and Mai Shiranui that will please fans. And if you don’t have a joystick for the home console versions, you should invest in one because playing KOF will be murder on your thumbs if you don’t.

The King of Fighters Collection: The Orochi Saga is available for the PlayStation 2, PlayStation Portable and Wii.

Watch It (Or Not) | Inkheart

In this second renaissance of Brendan Fraser (“Journey to the Center of the Earth” and “The Mummy 3” are flawed but fun and at the very least—profitable) I went into his latest with an enthusiasm and a willingness to add it to the list of successes. It didn’t hurt of course that ““Inkheart”,” a children’s fantasy adventure featuring father and daughter fighting the forces of evil with the power of the spoken word, has a broad appeal to the inner child and anyone that enjoys cracking open a good book from time to time. Sadly, I found myself a little disappointed that a movie that celebrates the written word as much as ““Inkheart”” does stumbled so thoroughly when it came to telling its own adventure.

Mo and Meggie (Fraser and Eliza Bennett) have spent the past decade looking for a copy of ““Inkheart”” the mysterious novel that changed their lives when Mo last read it out loud. Mo is a “silvertongue,” someone with the ability to bring the characters of a book to life when he reads their tales aloud.

The two most notable ones we come across in “Inkheart” are the villain and the vagabond. Andy Serkis is fiendishly fantastic as Capricorn, a wicked underling in the pages of “Inkheart” that has made the most of his time outside the book while Paul Bettany’s gloomy street performer, Dustfinger, yearns to return to the life and family he was taken from. Things get interesting when the characters meet their creator. Watching Jim Broadbent, as the book’s author, bumble through the awe and astonishment that come with meeting the realization of something he’d created was a real treat.

In that alone you can see that the ideas to make “Inkheart” an exciting, unique experience are there, but they hardly take advantage of the great concepts they’ve established. A sluggish pacing moves us in and out of scenarios in the least interesting of ways. At one point, Fraser’s character reads aloud from the “Wizard of Oz” summoning a tornado to act as a distraction during their escape. In that, we can see the potential for where this story could go. Sadly, Mo rarely cracks open a book for fear of recreating the same disastrous results of that mysterious first reading (Trying real hard to spare you from spoilers). Perhaps they didn’t want to step on the toes of the film’s grand finale, which has a lot of fun with the power of a silvertongue. Giant smog beast, Toto to the rescue, Helen Mirren on a unicorn. ‘Nuff said.

At the very least, “Inkheart” acts as a warm invitation for kids to open a book every once and a while. That alone is a good enough reason to drag along the little ones along and hopefully get them excited about the adventures that can be found within the pages of a good book. I’m just not convinced that the cinematic adventure telling them to read is even half as interesting as what awaits them in those pages.

Verdict | 5 out of 10 | Rent It!

Games | Commando: Steel Disaster

Commando: Steel Disaster is available for the Nintendo DS for $19.99 MSRP.

What’s the Nintendo DS equivalent of a mindless military action movie? Enter XS Games’ Commando: Steel Disaster, a balls-to-the-wall old-school shooter game that will test your dexterity and reflexes. Longtime gamers have seen this type of run-and-gun action before in games such as Konami’s Contra series and SNK Playmore’s Metal Slug series, but Commando: Steel Disaster actually
improves on both of those games.

As you might expect, you’ll encounter numerous enemy soldiers and tanks and expect to button-mash to keep the bullets flying. If you get hit by an enemy’s bullet, though, you won’t die instantly. Instead, the hero Storm has a health meter that depletes each time he gets hit, and it’s possible to refill his health meter by collecting armor power-ups along the way.

Storm can also duck and roll to avoid enemy fi re, a defensive technique that will save your bacon in tight situations. My only complaints with the game’s weapon power-ups are that the default rifl e is
largely ineff ective and once you fi nd the rocket and grenade launchers hidden within the levels, their ammo doesn’t last long enough.

The major battles, however, are quite satisfying and usually involve huge bosses that fill the DS’ top screen. If you enjoy simple games with endless streams of enemies and huge explosions, this game hits the target.
